    How can your GP help?

    Oral Medication

    • Antibiotics are used to reduce the inflammation of the skin. Tetracylin and erythromycin can be prescribed for rosacea, although these drugs are commonly used for acne.
    • Remember, oral antibiotics can cause unwanted side effects. Including upset stomach and diarrhea and because of the dangers of bacterial resistance their long-term use is not recommended.
    • You are most likely to be prescribed these drugs until your symptoms have been brought under control at which point Laser/Light can be used to prevent further flare-ups.

    Oral Isotretinoin

    • This is used to treat cystic Acne, however in excessive cases of Rosacea Isotretinoin can be given in low doses.
    • Your GP will have to refer you to a dermatologist to prescribe you Roaccutane.
    • Although the drug works wonders, it can have serious side effects.

    External Creams and Gels

    • The most popular prescription cream is metronidazole and azelaic acid.
    • Brimonidine tartrate, this new topical treatment comes in the form of a gel to be applied to the affected area once a day. It works by restricting the dilation of the blood vessels.
    • The topical treatments can cause sensitivity on the skin including itchy and burning sensation.
    • The topical treatments may be used as stand-alone treatments or in conjunction with Antibiotics.

    Summary

    • These treatments can cause side-effects and are not for long term use.
    • The Gold standard treatment for Rosacea remains IPL/Laser treatment.
