    About Rosacea

    What is Rosacea?

    • In the medical community it is not known what causes Rosacea, however, the general consensus is that it is genetic, not an acquired disease.
    • More likely to occur in fair-skinned or Eastern European origin, although more and more skin type 4s are showing signs of rosacea.
    • Rosacea is classed as a chronic inflammatory condition of the face.  It has been noted to especially affect the nose and cheeks.
    • It is characterized by a red or rosy coloration caused by the expansion of capillaries and sometimes accompanied by the appearance of acne-like pimples.
    • It may be transient, recurrent or persistent.
    Rosacea can cause the following:
    • Bruising
    • Crusting of skin
    • Swelling and redness
    • Blistering
    • A common symptom is the growth of telangiectasia (thread veins).

    Triggers of Rosacea

    • As with all dermatitis disorders, skin inflammation/irritation, the triggers and the strength of the reaction vary from person to person.
    • Below is a list of the most common recorded triggers, and how to prevent them:
      •  Exposure to sunlight – Avoid exposure when possible and wear sun protection of atleast SPF 50 at all times.
      • Stress – Meditation or Yoga techniques.
      • Strenuous Exercise
      • Alcohol
      • Hot Baths – Avoid use of scolding water and saunas
      • Spicy Foods & Dairy Products – Maintain a strict diet that controls or avoids these items altogether.
      • Humidity
      • Caffeine (found in tea, coffee and cola) – Maintain a strict diet that controls or avoids these items altogether.

    Types of Rosacea

    • Red blush – diffused redness
    • Linear telangiectasia – Thread veins
    • Mixture of red blush and Linear Telangiectasia

    Stages of Rosacea

    • Pre-Rosacea Flushing which affects the cheeks, chin, nose and forehead. The skin has become sensitive and there may be possible swelling. In this stage the Flushing and Blushing are Intermittent.
    • Vascular Rosacea: When small blood vessels on the nose and cheeks swell and become more visible. The skin is even more sensitive. The patient may also start to have oily skin with papules and pustules and have dandruff. In this stage, the redness is more long lasting.
    • Inflammatory Rosacea: There’s Small red bumps or puss filled bumps. The oils/sebaceous glands in the nose or even cheeks can become enlarged. This can lead to building up of tissue around the nose. It is mostly seen in men where the nose can become enlarged and bulbous. Can use CO2 Lasers to remove excess tissue around the nose.
    • Ocular Rosacea: This is serious and can affect the eyes. Medical attention is required. Symptoms are a persistent burning of the eyes and irritated swollen eyelids. Eyelashes may fall out.
